Activity: Use celestial navigation skills to chart a course from the Big Island of Hawaii’i to Easter Island.
Background: Humans explore out of necessity and curiosity by employing a variety of charting tools, including the use of the Moon, planets, and stars–common to voyaging on both the Earth and in space.
Value: Students honed their math, geography, science, and history skills while relying upon thorough research, critical thinking, and curiosity for the unknown.
Task: Each student submitted a voyaging plan detailing their vessel, when they would sail, and how they planned to stay on course.
Results: An open webcast–featuring voyaging experts–reviewed select submissions and provided engaging feedback on the activity.
