Activity: Design and build a full-scale model of an Earth-based research station that could support living and working on the Moon.
Background: In order to prepare for exploration on the Moon and Mars, NASA utilizes sites on Earth to simulate living and working in extra-terrestrial environments.
Value: Students employed a multitude of science, technology, and engineering skills as they developed an appreciation for communication, research, and critical thinking.
Task: Similar to the fully-functioning Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, students created their own small-scale models of a moon base.
Results: Space experts participated in an open webcast to review select submissions and provide engaging feedback to the students and the viewing audience.
